Safety management is a proactive way to pursue the mitigation of safety risks and improve safety performance. Safety management effectively implemented can lead to a documented, process-based approach to safety, as well as a better understanding of safety-related interdependencies and relationships.
Safety culture is the expression of how safety is perceived, valued and prioritized by employees and management in an organization and is arguably the single most important influence on the management of safety.
Achieving a culture of safety and striving for continuous improvement is a lifelong process. The SMS framework provides the road map and the tools you'll need to be successful, but make no mistake, the SMS requires vision, leadership and full participation from everyone.
The SMS was originally written by BSI, which explains it's complexity. In the world of "standards", the minutiae matters, which is a good thing for all of us, but it comes at a price. That price being a generally low participation rate among flight crews who are often unaware of what justifies a reportable event. That's why we focus on simple and easy when it comes to SMS data collection and analysis. For our managed clients, we provide a one page digital form that includes a FRAT, FOQA and AAR that gives us plenty of data to track. On top of that, they have been trained to know their observations, no matter how inconsequential they may appear, are important.
