Safety management is a proactive way to pursue the mitigation of safety risks and improve safety performance. Safety management effectively implemented can lead to a documented, process-based approach to safety, as well as a better understanding of safety-related interdependencies and relationships.
Safety culture is the expression of how safety is perceived, valued and prioritized by employees and management in an organization and is arguably the single most important influence on the management of safety.
Achieving a culture of safety and striving for continuous improvement is the goal of SMS and represents a lifelong process. Unfortunately for many small flight departments and airports with staffing constraints, the current standard has proven to be difficult to manage leading to disappointing results.
